The FootSteps Program

FootSteps is designed to fulfill the motto of the April 4th Foundation, Inc. where we "Tell the Story....Pass It On." During the FootSteps program we share Dr. King's vision with high school students from area churches, and they participate in the "FootSteps Youth Leadership Summit on Civil Rights".

Since 2010, FootSteps participants have studied the events and the lives of Civil Rights leaders and organizations that were active in the 1968 Sanitation Strike. 

The initial class had 20 high school students, the second year that number doubled and the program has continued with strong participation each. The students are selected through the recommendation of local churches. Civil Rights orientation and most of the activities taking place in Memphis, TN components are held at LeMoyne-Owen College. Each year, the Footsteps Program Youth visit and new and exciting place to expand their knowledge of history and the Civil Rights Movement. 

​​FOOTSTEPS TODAY

Traditionally, student participants spend a week in the classroom followed by a week of touring notable places in civil rights history and speaking with civil rights icons. The classroom experience provides vital knowledge and content from historians and civil rights experts.

This year, classes will be held at LeMoyne-Owen College, 807 Walker Ave. on June 18th through June 22nd, 2025, from 8:00am to 4:00pm. Travel will be June 25th to June 29th, 2025. More information about the trip will be shared during the registration meeting. The cost of the entire program is $750 and should be paid at the registration meeting.
